Homeopathic Remedies for Anxiety and Emotional Wellbeing

By Caroline at Crystal Heart Mind•6/12/2026

Anxiety, grief, overwhelm, and fear each have their own unique homeopathic signatures. Learn which remedies correspond to your emotional patterns and how to use them safely.

Homeopathic Remedies for Anxiety and Emotional Wellbeing

Emotional health is central to homeopathic philosophy. Unlike conventional approaches that typically address anxiety as a single diagnosis, homeopathy recognises that anxiety — and all emotional distress — presents differently in each person. The remedy that works brilliantly for one will do nothing for another, because it must match your specific pattern.

Understanding Emotional Patterns in Homeopathy

Homeopaths look for what's known as the totality of symptoms: the unique combination of mental, emotional, and physical indicators that characterise an individual's state. For anxiety, this means exploring not just the anxiety itself but how it manifests — with trembling, with perfectionism, with withdrawal, with anger, with fear of a particular thing.

Key Remedies for Anxiety States

Argentum Nitricum (Silver Nitrate)

For anticipatory anxiety — the dread that builds before an event. Think exam nerves, performance anxiety, fear of heights, claustrophobia, or social anxiety. This person tends toward hurried, impulsive behaviour and craves sweet and salty foods. The anxiety is often accompanied by digestive upset, particularly diarrhoea before a dreaded event.

Gelsemium (Yellow Jasmine)

Classic performance anxiety with a paralysed, 'stage fright' quality. This person becomes trembling, weak, and heavy-limbed with anxiety. They may lose their voice, need to urinate frequently, or feel mentally foggy. Often needed ahead of exams, public speaking, or medical procedures.

Ignatia (St Ignatius Bean)

The number one grief remedy. Ignatia is for acute emotional shock — the loss of a loved one, a relationship breakdown, a sudden disappointment. Characterised by sighing, mood swings between laughter and tears, a lump in the throat, and a sense that the emotion is too big to contain. This person suppresses their grief and tries to appear composed.

Natrum Muriaticum (Sea Salt)

For those who have internalised grief over a long period. The Nat Mur state involves a need for control and privacy, a tendency to ruminate and dwell, a strong dislike of consolation, and deep loneliness behind a self-sufficient exterior. Often needed by those who have 'held it together' through prolonged loss or trauma.

Aconitum (Monkshood)

For acute panic attacks of sudden onset, often with a sense of impending doom or fear of death. Aconite states arrive suddenly, are extremely intense, and are often triggered by a fright or shock. The person is restless, fearful, and may believe they are about to die.

Phosphorus

For the sensitive, empathetic, sociable person who absorbs others' emotions and becomes overstimulated. Their anxiety tends toward health anxieties and fears of the dark, alone, or thunderstorms. They are warm, affectionate, and creative, but easily overwhelmed.

Lycopodium (Club Moss)

For anxiety rooted in low self-confidence and fear of failure, particularly in professional or social settings. This person may appear confident to the outside world whilst feeling deeply insecure. They tend to be intellectually capable but doubt themselves intensely before a challenge.

Using These Remedies at Home

For acute emotional states — a panic attack, a bout of grief, anticipatory anxiety — use 30c potency, one dose every 30–60 minutes until you feel a shift. Repeat only when symptoms return.

For chronic emotional patterns, constitutional treatment with a qualified homeopath will address the root state far more effectively than self-prescribing.

A Gentle Reminder

Homeopathic remedies are safe, gentle, and can be used alongside any other treatment or medication. However, if you are experiencing clinical anxiety or depression, please also seek support from your GP or a mental health professional. Homeopathy works beautifully as a complement to other care, not necessarily as a standalone treatment for serious mental health conditions.
