What Is Homeopathy? A Gentle Introduction to Like Cures Like

By Caroline at Crystal Heart Mind•6/12/2026

Homeopathy is one of the most widely used complementary therapies in the world, yet it remains misunderstood. Here's a clear, honest introduction to its principles and practice.

What Is Homeopathy? A Gentle Introduction to Like Cures Like

Homeopathy is a system of natural medicine developed in the late 18th century by German physician Samuel Hahnemann. Based on the principle that 'like cures like', it is one of the most widely practised complementary therapies in the world — used by over 200 million people across 80 countries.

The Core Principles

1. Like Cures Like (Similia Similibus Curentur)

The foundational principle of homeopathy holds that a substance that causes symptoms in a healthy person can, in minute doses, stimulate the body's healing response in someone experiencing those same symptoms.

For example, Allium cepa (red onion) causes watery eyes and a runny nose in healthy people. In homeopathic form, it is used to help treat colds and hay fever presenting with exactly those symptoms.

2. Minimum Dose

Homeopathic remedies are prepared through a process of serial dilution and vigorous shaking called succussion. Hahnemann found that the more diluted a remedy became — provided it was succussed at each stage — the more potent its action, and the fewer side effects it produced.

This runs contrary to conventional pharmacological thinking and is one of the most debated aspects of the system.

3. The Whole Person

Homeopathy treats the individual, not the disease. Two people with the same diagnosis may receive entirely different remedies based on the unique pattern of their symptoms, their temperament, the time of day their symptoms worsen, what makes them feel better or worse, and many other individualising factors.

A Typical Consultation

A classical homeopathic consultation is unlike any other medical encounter. Your practitioner will want to know not just your chief complaint, but your life history, your emotional patterns, your sleep, your relationship with temperature, food, and weather, your fears and dreams. This detailed picture allows the selection of a single constitutional remedy that resonates with your whole state.

Initial consultations typically last 60–90 minutes. Follow-ups are scheduled to assess response, usually 4–6 weeks later.

Common Uses

Homeopathy is frequently sought for:

  • Recurrent infections (particularly in children)
  • Hormonal imbalances and menstrual irregularities
  • Anxiety, grief, and emotional trauma
  • Skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis
  • Digestive complaints
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Chronic fatigue

First Aid Remedies to Know

  • Arnica 30c: The first choice after any injury, bruising, shock, or trauma. Remarkable for reducing swelling and bruising post-surgery or dental work.
  • Apis 30c: For stings, bites, and allergic reactions with hot, swollen, burning redness relieved by cold.
  • Nux vomica 30c: For digestive upsets from overindulgence, hangovers, or irritable bowel.
  • Ignatia 30c: For acute grief, shock, or emotional upset.

Approaching Homeopathy with Openness

Whether you approach homeopathy as a curious sceptic or an enthusiastic supporter, its consistent use over 200 years across diverse cultures invites genuine inquiry. Working with a qualified practitioner — particularly for chronic or complex conditions — offers the deepest and most lasting results.
